This would make doing reports MUCH easier, especially if someone leaves right after doing something against the rules and you can't catch his steamID for a report. Technically you can get someone's steamID from a demo by converting the demo to a replay, but less experienced players in demo editing don't know how to do that. It would help the overall server experience.

If you go to steam and look on you friends list and go to recently played with,
it looks like this https://gyazo.com/9b5608044d68a4a9d15d89294d70f6e7
you can use a website that takes the steam profile URL and turns it into thier ID. I use https://steamid.io/

Can't you just type status in the console?

If somebody shows up, breaks a rule, and leaves before you can type status I believe they will not show up.

In my experience this isn't always accurate. It frequently leaves off users. Even if it only left off accounts that weren't premium, it still wouldn't be the best as it wouldn't combat people creating alts, or even people who just don't want to pay for the game.

I'm not exactly sure how it would look aesthetically to do this suggestion, or how well it would work, but if it doesn't take up too many lines just to announce a player connected it might be worth a shot.

If you start recording the demo and then type status it will show up. It works for me.
DURING RECORDING A DEMO, yes. During demo editing, no.
The point of this feature would be to catch someone's steamID before he leaves as soon as he breaks a rule.

Usually the best thing to do is, the second you find out a player is breaking the rules type in either 'status' in console, or sm_steamid <name>, in either ingame-chat or the console.
And if the player does manage to leave the server before you have the chance to do so, when in-game, the Steam Overlay where it says 'Friends' you can 'View Players' and see another list of recently played with. Usually this one is more accurate than the one on Steam, what Am_Seal explained.

Not everyone uses the same Skin on Steam, which might cause the location to be different for others. But here's mine.

I don't think it's necessary to add additional text upon joining a server. But as of now, I can't think of an alternative solution to combat this issue.

I've repeated myself many times already, but I'll repeat myself again.
  • "status" command does not work in demo playback.
  • The "Recently played with" thing on steam doesn't always record every single player you've played with.
  • Typing "status" in console doesn't help after a player has left, same with sm_steamid
  • The point of this feature would be to help people that are new to reporting and can't always snag someone's steamID after they've left

Makes sense to me, as you mentioned it would help for people after they left, and newer players who don't know how to do things. If this is implemented though, I think it would be best if it were something you could toggle on and off, as people in this thread see it as useless, and I'm sure many others would too. Seeing this, at least in my eyes, might be annoying, with certain words being cut in half when typing in chat (because of the longer name, a problem that I already struggle with). Or maybe it could be implemented just for when someone leaves/joins the server.

One thing that came to mind with this. What happens if the chat gets somewhat spammed? Making it difficult to even get his steamID from the chat or console.
If your idea is to only suggest having it upon a player joining the server, then an active chat may ruin that. To make it more effective, it'd also need to be displayed when the player leaves the server.
And I'm not always a fan of adding dialog to the join/leave messages. But if the benefit of having this outweighs just some extra dialog, then I suppose I'm alright with it.

That's what I meant. Like, if whenever some leaves / joins the server it says, for example, emu [STEAM:666420] joined from United States, and the same thing when they left. It would be helpful if someone mfk, and joins back with a different name.
