The staff of BLW.tf have decided that the forums are outdated and should be closed. They plan on moving functions of forums over to the discord so they can shut down the forums. It is my belief this move is a big mistake, the forums are a great and specific resource for Rules, Reports, a place to talk about game topics as well off topic discourse. Discord is bloated, and a platform that hosts many evil and perverse communities. Forcing users on discord, especially the many children who are active in the BLW community, invites them to potentially engage in harmful predators and communities. There are a minority of people that are very active on the forums and servers that don't have a discord and will be cut off from all of these resources. This is a serious change that I think is unnecessary and harmful to this community that I've come to love over the last year.
If you think the forums should remain active, please sign your name below.

Similiar to how bloated the moderator applications are on the forums right now.
Comparing staff applications to reports/appeals aren’t a fair comparison due to being two different set of circumstances.

Asides convenience* I can't see why people would needs to ability to be able to anonymous report
Users with no accounts at all would have the ability to be able to anonymously report someone ruining their game. Its not an issue of anonymity. With a discord only situation you would be forcing many to create disposable discord accounts to make a single report. Also it is way easier to make a forum account than a discord acct. Having two places to make an appeal is a great option for people banned from either place to contest their punishment.
Reports and appeals have been getting resolved within minutes/hours compared to how they were here. If you want to diversify the idea sure but it will be slower and outdated.
the forums are slow and they'd only be slower if the active staff had to divide attention maintaining something that already exists elsewhere.
Justice is not always speedy. Just because it takes longer doesn't make the report or punishments any less valuable. I would really like an answer to my question about a potential bot that would post to the discord new threads similar to the Latest Thread sidebar, It wouldn't even need to post everything, just new reports would suffice. Speed is not key as I said above, but to remove the report feature all together on the forums restricts nondiscord users from making reports. Dissenters will never be reported.

Off-topic discussions not related to tf2 aren't on us to encourage
wtf, i forgot the no fun rule, you should remove memes channel and any other non tf2 related channels from the discord too. /s
This is supposed to be a fun place, the mascot is a fucking hampter. However i understand that board doesn't get much activity anymore, but in the event those select boards i mentioned do remain up, having a seperate off-topic board is a good catch-all for anything off topic.

This already exists, and has for a long time before this attempted forum migration began.

If this is already the case why is there a disparity between discord reports and forum reports? If reports are posted to discord via bot, does that trigger the same protocol as a discord report. Are the staff ignoring the bot?

Kimmel you have some crazy conspiracy theories, judging by some of your replies. What do you think is the motive behind closing forums?

the motive? what are you fucking talking about? idfk.... why am i a conspiracy theorist?

nah not like that, I am saying you are ranting and raving about something that doesnt actually like matter, at all? Most of your points are random nonsense like my favourite "Forcing users on discord, especially the many children who are active in the BLW community, invites them to potentially engage in harmful predators and communities". Like I prefer the Forums but not enough to go on your tyrade, can you answer this:

What will change when forums close?

like actually what will change, I understand people without an account cant make reports but it literally takes 10 seconds to make a discord account, email then password DONE I am pretty sure you dont even have to accept a confirmation email. So actually what will change? Its just a bit comical at this point aint it, is it hardcoded in your american DNA to defend a slow system that is plagued with 64.326 bugs and counting?

To put it in terms you would understand, maybe its time the Forums stay AFK frozen forever. I think the sooner you accept that there isnt really a difference the sooner you will just bite the bullet and use discord its literally the same thing but with more functionality.

you dodged the question, thats question disrespect if I am being honest.

I think you should run your own blackwonder forums. Download Visual Studio Code, learn some html, css and javascript and you are good to go. Then you can rant about these forums closing on there and ban anyone who disagrees and then you will be objectively correct. Kimmel Blackwonder Jailbreak Forums, the future of websites for grown men upset that a forum site for a 17 year old games community made server that is moving platform and will lose 0 features in the process. Just make sure warden disrespect is banned it better be underlined and in bold and size 60.

You can report users without an account, I would hope that this feature atleast remains.
Yup, that is still something we'll have to discuss. I assure you it's on my list of things to resolve before the move.
Well with this forum users only have access to BLW topics. theres no way using blackwonder.com would i be able to access s forum for smoking meth or something. With a discord i could get invited to anyserver that someone wants me to join
Honestly, this is a bit of a stretch. Many already have a discord account, and even if they made one just to join BLW, yeah they can be invited to join other servers, but that's their prerogative. We're not supposed to babysit people and which places they join.
Why not keep the user forums open for Reports, Appeals, Mod Apps, Problems, and Off-Topic. If its not a money thing, why close off options for people? Would it not be possible to simply have a discord bot post when theres a post made on the forums.
Regarding the discord bot - we already have that in the discord server.
This point, I can see your reasoning, and am definitely willing to consider it. Reports and appeals could remain in some form on our website, having those in two places shouldn't really be that big an issue. Mod apps are definitely not fit to be in two places at once imo, especially since the majority of staff actions are handled via discord anyways. Problems and off-topic - these ones I'm honestly not too sure. Off-topic is dead anyways, and problems is more a tracker for issues we have yet to fix, which means keeping them in two places at once is just more workload on the development staff.
I'll add this to the list of stuff to discuss.
Both mediums are good. Getting rid of bloat is welcome, but shutting down the whole forums is riddiculous.
I still believe there is no real need for a forums, but having an alternative way to file appeals and reports is something we'd have to discuss. As mentioned before, I've got those added as talking points for future discussions.
I agree with Kimmel. It isn’t fair on us to force people to make a discord account just to report someone ingame or to report a problem with our servers. It will just be easier to not play blackwonder again. The “splitting the community” argument never made sense to me, as there is no “community” aspect to reports, appeals, etc. We don’t gather around as a community all come and discuss together what we should do with some freekiller on jailbreak, or some random person who sprayed a naughty spray on class wars. Sure, implementing more functionality into our discord is all well and good, but we should not shut down the forums and leave the people who either don’t have a discord account, or don’t wish to make one in the dark. Taking away this functionality will be a detriment to the community as a whole.
The main use of the forums was for reports, appeals and applications. The latter will definitely be moved off in one way or another, as discord is as good as required for staff anyways. The first two options - yeah, it'd make sense to keep them in some way, We'll have to do a bit of discussion. If you don't agree with the "split community" point, then sure, but what about the staff team that has to split their attention, as well as how it looks on the community as a whole, when a new player comes to blw.tf and sees a dead forums with not much activity?
At the bare minimum, the forums would be pushed back, and the
Are the staff ignoring the bot?
Likely most staff have notifications turned off for the forums and/or the channel with the forum notifications. Personally I had the latter disabled up until last week, and forum notifications tend to come in with a slight delay for me. Idk, I use discord more than the forums, and for me personally, I got the feeling that many staff members do too, which results in faster report clearing.

its literally the same thing but with more functionality.
I'd disagree with this point. The reason why we're having this discussion is because the discord is NOT the same as the forums. Each platform has its downsides, which is why I'm engaging here, to see if we got points we missed and can see if we can iron them out.

Things seem to be getting off-track here. If kimmel doesn't want the forums to shut down, I'm willing to hear him out, all his arguments, and maybe see if we can change our plans. Nothing is set in stone as of yet, and the move is happening slowly so we can hear everyone out. No matter how "manchild-y" the arguments might sound to you, I'll take everything said here (except dan, you don't matter) seriously and consider what was said.
I'd appreciate it if we can keep this thead on-topic, about complaints about the move.

As of now, I've been monitoring both the forums and the discord. After having subcommunities added, activity in the discord has gone up by a bit, and although they're not as big as the external discord servers where the subcommunities originally were, people are having discussions in there.
the main difference between a forums and discord is that discord is better for casual chatting, and forums are more for slow and longer-term posting. This means the forums requires more stuff and dedicated people to keep it active, while on discord anyone can pop by, say hi and leave again, which makes things look more active.
We don't have people on the forums coming by every day, making threads and discussing what they did in-game, or sharing memes, no? On the discord, we have people doing exactly that. They're making suggestions, complaining about features, and discussing potential changes all in their subcommunities. Reports and appeals are being handled faster, plus the discord is also discoverable via Discord's server discovery feature.
Yes, I agree that sacrafices have to be made, and @Kimmel has managed to convince me that a complete shutdown of forum features is not a good idea in the long run. Still, I believe in at the very least simplifying the current forums, or moving some of its functions into a new look is kinda required to keep up with the times.

The forums absolutely have their role to play, and to simply remove them would be a step too far. With that being said, I would still be sad if it was officially delegated to the "rules and anonymous reports" website.

As you've said, the forums are much better suited for long term discussions whereas the discord is like eating a bag of potato chips in text form. You will never be able to sleep on a comment and then reply to it the next day. The conversation will have moved 10 miles away from where it was the previous night.

I think suggestions that have a serious chance of being added, whether it be a rule change or a new server or whatever, should have a forum thread. Taking in the pros and cons from 50 discord users is not an easy task when everybody is speaking at once and the messages are slowly scrolling away before your eyes. You may make a great point on discord, but if nobody happened to see it because two other users are busy arguing with one another, well tough luck your post is buried now. Forum threads may get long, and can be driven off topic, but are much more organized and permanent than a discord chat. For example, look no further than this thread itself. If this were a discord chat it would be TCC and Kimmel arguing in a long string of messages while anybody else struggles to get a word in. But, because the forums are a slower paced platform, I can put a nice wall of text in this thread and can rest easy knowing that my voice is being heard.

Plus, the forums are nice because you don't get a notification every time pablogonzalez2008 sends a message to #suggestions asking for Blues to have crits removed. Yeah, you can turn off notifications, I know I did, but in turn I found myself never checking the server in return. There's simply an overwhelming amount of messages that you can't possibly hope to keep up with, so why try?

One thing I hate about the move to discord is the reports. On the forums when someone reports you, you are able to see that report. And if for example; you see a guys reason for reporting you doesn’t make sense, you can offer your own sentiment in order to not get punished. But on the discord, everything is private. So if you’re banned for a dumb reason you have no access to the report unless you get an admin to get whatever information you want for you. And by the time you make an appeal, the admins already got a bias on the situation

I personaly like the having the reports in discord and on the fourms, as if you need someone to be dealt with quickly, its more likely to be seen on discord, where as on fourms it takes abit longer. But i do kind of agree with StepGrandson, that there is no way to directly counter argument the report, but also in my opinion if there is valid evidence there is no need for the other party to counter argument anything and in most cases having the one be reported talking to the one who is reporting will just lead to arguments / bad blood.

That's what the discord forum channels are for.

which it does, we have a suggestions forum on the discord.

In theory, discord forums are just discord chats split into different forum posts, but there are workarounds like adding a mandatory cooldown period to prevent rapid-fire messages.

Do you have examples of this happening on the forums? at best, this is a rare occurence, and memeing and shitposting is more common than actual people defending themselves.

but also in my opinion if there is valid evidence there is no need for the other party to counter argument anything and in most cases having the one be reported talking to the one who is reporting will just lead to arguments / bad blood.
this too, although it's not that major a factor. People will find other ways to make assumptions and pin the blame on someone. Still, I haven't really seen a case where someone properly and logically defends themselves in a report, because there are very few people who are regulars that have notifications enabled (to know when they were reported), and most regulars know their way around the rules anyways.

You can selectively enable/disable notifications on discord, so you can have the forum channels enabled while #general is disabled. This way, you're only notified of forum posts.

If this were a discord chat it would be TCC and Kimmel arguing in a long string of messages while anybody else struggles to get a word in.
Also - about this, this is more a problem when both parties are online. Because of how forums are inherently set up, it's 99% of the time when only one side of the discussion is online. If both are online at the same time, back-and-forth message chains can still form, although it's quite rare.
If people have notifications turned off on discord, I wouldn't be surprised if forum posts processed very slowly as well. The reason why these quick rapid-fire messages happen is because of discord's accessibility allowing people to log in instantly once they have a notification.
