The 737 MAX is the latest generation of the best selling commercial aircraft in aviation history. Odds are you have flown on a Boeing 737 at some point in your life. The 737 MAX has new engines that change the airplane's center of gravity.

I'm pretty certain ive been on a 737 already a couple of times.
It's unfortunate, but accounting for the immense air traffic there is a surprisingly low amount of fatal crashes involving airliners. The media is just making a big fuzz as soon as something appears to happen because there's nothing else to talk about.

Look at this map at any given time to be able to view flights happening currently, and those are most likely not even all.
The pilots also have mentioned not being introduced to these sensors and software, which should actually kinda be something noteworthy.

Oh yes, flying is the safest form of travel. There is absolutely no doubt about that. Aviation continues to get safer and safer each year. in 2017, not a single passenger died on any commercial jet around the world. Flightradar24 is a gift to everyone with real-time data of airspeed, altitude, and sometimes ATC transmissions. I'm an aviation enthusiast and I care deeply about something like this. I've flown on Boeing 737s multiple times including the 737 MAX a year ago to Houston. Just because a 737 crashed doesn't mean they all will eventually. It's not a De Havilland Comet situation. Do others care? Well, that's partly why this thread exists. Someone might care too, some might not. It belongs in Off Topic like it currently is.

I don't usually see news stories around here but I think that we could use more of them. It's something that even a gaming community can use well. I'm not bringing this up to intensify any hysteria. It's also not really a "big fuzz" as 737 MAX variants are being grounded all across the world. It's very rare for an aircraft model to be grounded in multiple countries. The media has learned how not to be like a 15-year old's YouTube conspiracy theory channel as they were when covering Malaysia 370. With that being said, they're only just raising concerns from comparisons which is not equivalent to creating conspiracy theories. It's something that a flyer, especially a frequent flyer, would want to ask (not to mention that flying is becoming increasingly more available to people around the world). Are the two recent events related? We don't know at this point. However, it's hard to blame anyone for being alert about the new airframes of the same model and the small timespan between the 2 events.

The FAA had sent out an Airworthiness Directive about the 737 MAX weeks after the Lion Air crash. They've required for pilots to have more training on how to deal with potentially false AoA data related to the MCAS that was unique on the MAX, unlike its previous variants. Pilots switching from the 737 Next Generation variants to the MAX variants were not advised about the MCAS system.

Flying may be the safest method of travel, but it doesnt change the fact that unlike other forms of travel, you are DONE if you crash. One or 2 lucky saps might get a parachute, but everyone else can kiss their happy lives goodbye...

My opinion on the banning of the aircraft:
I thought it was America first? turns out it's more like America last
Seems to me like the US don't want to ban the aircraft until a 3rd crash...

Head-on crash? sure.
But a lot of crashes have been survived by passangers, as not every crashing plane will be seeing the inside of a mountain.
Then again
Getting stuck in an elevator? chances are 1 in 5000
Die in an airplane? one-in-5.3 million

The thing about people being afraid about flying is the fact that if planes do crash, they get massive coverage of what happened, and many people know about it. If someone dies in a car crash, only a handful of people find out.
My thoughts are that if every car crash gets a full article on the news, then people would be afraid of driving too.

Pretty sure the ratio of plane crash survivors to casualties is a different story. May not be likely, but you are far more likely to die in a plane crash than any other accident, Should it occur.
