Not really the bot's fault if nobody is willing to restock it. In fact, I doubt anyone even knows that the bot gives you credits for the metal you give it, so it should be at least a bit more "visible" somehow.

Well, it can (you can sell metal/weapons to get credits), but the real question is who will restock it and when will it be restocked.
